JACKSON - The Rock Hill Redmen couldn't score. The Jackson Ironmen couldn't keep from scoring.
Rock Hill failed to score in the second quarter, and then Jackson banked in a 3-pointer to squeeze out a 44-41 win Tuesday.
"We both had opportunities down the stretch, but they made the plays," Redmen coach Marty Mills said. "We played hard and we played with more intensity than we have in several games."
K.C. Christian hit a 15-footer to tie the game at 41-41. After an exchange of turnovers, Jackson had the ball out-of-bounds at its own end with 1.4 seconds to play.
Travis Downard took the inbounds pass with 1.4 seconds to play, turned and banked in a 23-foot 3-pointer to win the game.
The wild finish wiped out a second-half comeback by the Redmen, who failed to score in the second quarter.
Christian had four points in the first quarter to help Rock Hill take a 13-12 lead. Reid Arnold scored seven points for Jackson.
Although the Redmen didn't score in the second quarter, Jackson managed just six points and took an 18-13 halftime lead.
Derek Martin's four points in the third quarter helped Rock Hill draw to within 28-26.
Jared Humphreys had six points in the fourth quarter and Downard sank a pair of free throws. Christian and Martin combined for eight points to tie the game and set up the wild finish.
"We played much better the second half," Mills said. "We did a better job blocking them out. We fell behind the first half just because we didn't block out. I was pleased with our effort. Jackson is a tough place to play."
Christian and Martin scored 10 points each to lead Rock Hill (3-3). Downard scored 14 and Arnold 13 to pace Jackson.
"Sean Mullins played well defensively, and Derek Martin came in and played well around the rim. Zach Mullins and Christian both played well," Mills said.
"We just didn't get to the free throw line like we're used to. We didn't attack the basket like we should. But we made some game adjustments and that's encouraging."
In the reserve game, Rock Hill won 43-38 in three overtimes. Nick Snavely had 25 points and 13 rebounds while Brian Skaggs scored 11 for the Redmen.
The Redmen hosts Ironton St. Joseph Saturday.
