When you pit veterans vs. youngsters, guess who wins?

The South Gallia Rebels used their veteran lineup to outmanned the young St. Joseph Flyers 74-52 Friday.

"They jumped on a us and then we couldn't slow them down," Flyers coach Adam Simpson said. "They've got seven seniors and they were just bigger, strong and faster."

Josh Waugh and Jason Merrick combined for 47 points to lead the Rebels (2-3). Waugh finished with 24 and Merrick had 23.

Shawn Hacker, the Flyers lone senior, had another monster game with 35 points, 24 rebounds and five blocked shots.

The Flyers freshman backcourt and sophomore frontcourt were hampered by 26 turnovers.

"We have to play more relaxed and make the passes against the press that we work on," Simpson said.

Merrick had eight points, Waugh seven and Brandon Caldwell six points as the Rebels raced to a 27-11 lead in the first quarter.

South Gallia extended its lead to 41-20 at the break as Merrick scored eight more points in the second quarter. Hacker had five points in the quarter.

Waugh and Merrick combined for 11 points in the third quarter to pad the lead. But Hacker scored 10 points as the Flyers went on a 15-0 run to end the quarter that spilled over into the fourth quarter and closed the gap to 14.

However, Waugh pumped in 11 points in the fourth quarter to help offset 13 points by Hacker as the Rebels continued to pull away.

The Flyers host Piketon Tuesday.
