PORTSMOUTH - The Notre Dame Titans had a plan. The St. Joseph Flyers had a counter plan.

Notre Dame elected to take 6-foot-7 center Shawn Hacker out of the offense, but the Flyers supporting cast responded as St. Joseph beat the Titans 66-49 Saturday.

Freshmen Cory Lewis and Michael Basedow led the Flyers with 23 and 17 points, respectively. Hacker still finished with 14 points, 19 rebounds and five blocked shots.

"They put three kids around Shawn and we knew they were going to do it. That left the other kids open and they knocked the shots down," Flyers coach Adam Simpson said.

"When two freshmen can come out and lead you in scoring, that's a big lift for Cory and Michael and the team. And Ryan Schwab did a nice job running the team and he's a freshman. They stepped it up. They took the pressure off Shawn to do all the scoring."

Lewis had 10 points in the first quarter and Basedow had 10 in the second quarter as the Flyers went up 36-24 at the half.

After the Titans got within 45-36 in the third quarter, Lewis and Hacker scored six each and Alex Swarts five in the fourth quarter as the Flyers pulled away.
