WVU edges Marshall in annual shootout

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Tyrone Sally scored seven of his 18 points down the stretch to lead West Virginia to a 55-51 victory over Marshall on Wednesday night.

Joe Herber added 12 points for West Virginia (9-6), which won the lowest scoring game since the series between the cross-state rivals moved to Charleston in 1989.

Marvin Black had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Marshall (6-8).

After watching Marshall go on a 20-2 run for its first lead in the second half, the Mountaineers went to their inside game to get it back.

Jarmon Durisseau-Collins and Sally made consecutive 3-point plays and D'or Fischer hit a baby hook for a 43-42 lead with 9:35 left.

Tre Whitted's 3-pointer put Marshall ahead 13 seconds later, but Patrick Beilein's long jumper with 9:05 left gave the Mountaineers the lead for good, 46-45.

The teams managed only 15 points combined the rest of the game.

Sally put the Mountaineers ahead 52-49 after tipping in an Herber miss with 33 seconds left. Sally sank three free throws in the final 13 seconds to put the game away.

West Virginia led by 11 points on five occasions in the first half but didn't score over the final three minutes.

West Virginia holds a 24-8 overall lead in the series. The last six games have been decided by six points or less.
