Lady Trojans escape Fairland’s upset bid

PORTSMOUTH - Close was good, just not good enough.

The Fairland Lady Dragons were on the verge of an upset, but Tonya McKenzie took over in the fourth quarter and rallied the Portsmouth Lady Trojans to a 57-47 win Thursday.

"We played pretty well," Fairland coach Nathan Speed said.

"We made some plays when we had to, but McKenzie just got hot on us at the end. We're playing well and this is when we want to be playing well."

McKenzie had 26 points as Portsmouth ran its record to 9-4. Brya Coleman added 10 points and Sarah Barney nine.

Brianna Davis had 12 points and a blocked shot for Fairland (7-6). Megan Fisher had 10 points, four assists, and three steals. Kara Riley grabbed 14 rebounds and Kristen Berry eight.

Fisher scored four points in the first quarter as Fairland took a 12-4 lead.

McKenzie then had 13 points, including three trifectas in the second quarter, and Barney added seven points as Portsmouth took a 23-22 halftime lead.

Jennifer Legg hit a pair of 3-pointers in the quarter to keep Fairland close.

Davis scored six points in the third quarter as Fairland went up 36-35.

The lead was up to three when McKenzie got hot again and scored 12 points in the fourth quarter to trigger the Lady Trojans comeback.

Fairland made 16 of 61 field goal attempts for 26 percent. Portsmouth made 21 of 63 floor shots for 33 percent.
