Coal Grove girls suffer first non-conference loss

COAL GROVE - The non-league streak ended.

But just barely.

The Coal Grove Lady Hornets had been unbeaten in non-conference games this season until losing 34-33 Saturday to the Portsmouth Clay Lady Panthers.

Coal Grove, 8-6, took a 14-9 lead at the end of the first quarter as Chelsea Markins scored all five of her points while Samantha Hall also scored five points and Holli Swarts four.

But the offense evaporated in the second quarter as Coal Grove managed just four points and fell behind 19-18 at the half.

Swarts had four more points in the third quarter as Coal Grove regained the lead at 27-25.But Clay was able to outscore the Lady Hornets 9-6 in the final quarter to win.

Swarts scored 12 points and Hall 11 to lead Coal Grovel. Sarah Shaffer had 12 points for Clay with Erica Singer and Katie Duduit adding nine each.
