WILLOW WOOD - How low can you go?
The Symmes Valley Vikings were a bunch of low-down ballplayers Friday as they used their inside game to rout the Beaver Eastern Eagles 74-51 Friday
"The last three quarters of the Green game we started going inside, so we've figured that down low is the way to go," Vikings coach Alvin Carpenter said.
Jarred Schafer, who had five 3-pointers, finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Seth Colegrove finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Michael White and Matt Owens combined for 10 points down inside.
Kyle Gilmore scored 16 points while Chris Elswick had eight points, six assists, and five steals.
"We've been keeping Shafer low to help, and White and Colegrove played well. And that was probably Elswick best game. He played really good defense," Carpenter said.
Adam Vaughn led Eastern with 23 points, 21 in the second half.
Shafer hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 12 points in the first quarter to stake Symmes Valley to a 24-7 lead.
Elswick got all eight of his points in the second quarter, but Eastern cut the spread to 40-27 at the half.
Gilmore scored eight points the first half of the third quarter as the Vikings opened up a big lead and Carpenter began to empty his bench.
The Vikings went up 70-40 on a couple of baskets by Chase Higgins before Vaughn got 11 points to halt the onslaught.
