COAL GROVE - Six was enough.

The Coal Grove Hornets snapped a six-game losing streak as they blasted the Wayne (W.Va.) Pioneers 78-55 Tuesday in a non-league game.

Tom Pemberton scored 24 points and Brandon Rymer 19 as the Hornets improved to 5-7 on the season.

"We've been struggling and we needed a win. Pemberton and Rymer played pretty solid. Pemberton made 11 of 12 from the line. He hasn't been shooting well from free throw line, so that was nice to see," Hornets coach Darrell Humphreys said.

"Luke Tackett started for us and he got us going early with some solid defense. Tyler Sexton played a solid game. He's played much better as of late."

Kyle Wellman scored 13 points for Wayne.

Wayne took a 4-0 lead to start the game, but Rymer had three straight steals that he turned into baskets and got Coal Grove in front 6-4.

"Our pressure bothered them. It kept them from getting into a continuity in their halfcourt offense," Humphreys said.

Pemberton had nine points - 5 of 5 from the line - in the first quarter as Coal Grove jumped in front 15-11.

Sexton match Pemberton's effort as he scored nine points in the second quarter and the Hornets lead was 39-25 at the break.

Rymer and Pemberton scored seven points each in the third quarter and the Hornets defense held Wayne to 10 points as the lead ballooned to 61-35.

"We didn't play as well as we can, but we played better as the game went along," Humphreys said. "This is a good shot of confidence for us."

Jim Hankins had four points in the fourth quarter to pace the Hornets.

The Hornets play at Ironton St. Joseph Friday.
