COAL GROVE - That's why they call it a rivalry.

Favored teams don't always win in rivalries, and Coal Grove proved that point Friday night as the Hornets upset the Rock Hill Redmen 53-50 in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

"This is always a big rivalry and anything can happen when we play," Hornets coach Darrell Humphreys said. "Our kids were ready to play tonight."

Tyler Sexton had 15 points to lead Coal Grove (6-9, 1-6 OVC). Brandon Rymer added 12 points and Jimmy Lemon scored 10.

"Tyler is starting to play with some confidence. That was his best game of the year. He came out on fire," Humphreys said."We didn't get a lot of points off the bench, but we got a lot of good minutes from Randy Wise, Shane Bridges, and Luke Tackett."

The loss was very damaging to the Redmen who could have drawn virtually even in the OVC race following Chesapeake's loss to South Point. Rock Hill is now 9-7 overall and 4-3 in the league.

Zach Mullins scored 17 points, Rickie McDonie 12, and Roger Joseph 10 to pace the Redmen.

Sexton scored 12 of his points in the first quarter and Lemon hit a 3-pointer as Coal Grove jumped in front 20-13.

Mullins, who had 15 of his points in the first half, scored eight points in the second quarter to get Rock Hill within 30-27 at the half. Tommy Pemberton scored four in the quarter for Coal Grove.

"Zach Mullins had a nice first half for them," Humphreys said. "The key for us was making some adjustments at the half and cooling (Mullins) off."

In the third quarter, McDonie scored six points while K.C. Christian and Joseph had four each as Rock Hill tied the game at 43-43. Rymer hit a pair of 3-pointers and Lemon was 3 of 4 from the line in the quarter.

Bridges and Lemon had four each in the fourth quarter to help offset just 2 of 8 foul shooting as Coal Grove pulled out the win.

In the reserve game, Coal Grove won 40-29 as J.D. Elswick scored 11 and Derek Otta 10. Nick Snavely had nine and Brian Skaggs eight for the Redmen.
