The big boys came up big again.

Division I schools Logan and Watkins Memorial again doiminated the field as they finished 1-2 Saturday in the 51st annual Ironton Invitational track and field meet.

Despite the recent dominance of the two teams among the smaller schools, Ironton coach Greg Cronacher isn't upset.

"Logan and Watkins are big schools, but I like having tougher competition coming into the meet. It makes the other teams in the meet push themselves harder and makes for a better meet," Cronacher said.

South Point had a good performance in finishing third with 136 points. Chesapeake took fourth place with 88 points.

"I was real pleased. We're a real young team of mostly freshmen and sophomores, so I was happy with how well we performed against some good competition," Pointers coach Randy Smith said.

Quentin Smith led the Pointers as he won the high jump with a leap of 6-foot and the 110 hurdles (16.3), and was fourth in the 100

and 200 meter dashes.

South Point freshman Chris Smith came away with two wins as he threw the discus 136-6 and heaved the shot put 51 feet.

The Pointers 4×200 relay team of Jarrell Dean, Jude Crabtree, Aaron Patterson, and John Crager was first with a time of 1:38.7.

Chesapeake's Jeff Thornburg won the 300 meter hurdles, the Panthers only first place finish in the meet, while Tristan Clark was second in the 100 and 200 dashes.

"I was pleased with the way our younger guys performed," Chesapeake coach Phil Davis said.

Overall, Ironton finished fifth with 37 points, Rock Hill had 36, Coal Grove finished with 18, Portsmouth East 10, Portsmouth 9, and Wayne (W.Va.) had 3 points.

Derique Bacon in the 400 meter dash and Ben Murphy in the shot put had Ironton's highest finishes at second place. Justin Gillum, who spent the morning taking the ACT test, was fourth in the pole vault while Shane Kerns was seventh in the long jump.

"Derique Bacon, Ben Murphy, Justin Gillum, and Shane Kerns all gave a great effort. Overall, we need to step it up as a team," Cronacher said.

Area teams will run Thursday in the Chesapeake Lions Club meet.
