CHESAPEAKE - It was all Winfield.

The 37th annual Chesapeake Lions Club Invitational track meet belonged to the Winfield (W.Va.) boys and girls who both came away with team championships.

"Winfield is pretty strong. They had about everyone back from last year," Chesapeake Panthers coach Phil Davis said.

In the boys meet, Winfield had 189 points to outdistance second place South Point with 95.3 points. Chesapeake was third with 78, followed by River Valley with 51, Ironton 38, Gallipolis 29.3, Rock Hill 20.3, Coal Grove 17 and Fairland 8.

"We had some bright spots. We had some people run some PRs (personal records). But we still have a long way to go," Davis said.

Winfield won nine events en route to its easy victory.

South Point's Chris Smith was a double winner again as he took the shot put (51-2 3/4) and the discus (142-2). Teammate Quentin Smith claimed the high jump with a 6-0 leap.

Ironton's Derique Bacon took first place in the 400 meter dash with a 51.8 clocking. Matt Thornton of Rock Hill won the long jump at 19-4 1/4. Chesapeake's Tristin Clark won the 100 meter dash at 11.0 seconds.

Winfield had 174 points to win the girls meet. Gallipolis was second with 89 points. The rest of the field had South Point with 50 points, Chesapeake 49, Ironton 48, Fairland 39, Rock Hill 38, River Valley 21 and Coal Grove 17.

"We did the best we could. We did have some girls get their personal best, so we're getting better," Ironton girls coach Tim Thomas said.

Winfield took eight first-place finishes to outdistance the field.

Ironton's Mandy Boykin ran a 12.5 in the 100 meter dash to not only win the event but tie the meet record.

Veronica Perko of Chesapeake ran a 2:34.6 to win the 800 meter run. Rock Hill's Cassie Chaffins won the long jump as she leaped 15-3 1/2.
