Ironton firefighters have been busy lately - busier than they would have been if someone had not been making work for them. They're asking people to be aware of and report suspicious activity in their neighborhoods.

Fire Chief

Tom Runyon said there have been four confirmed cases of arson in the city in the last month.

March 12, shortly before a brush fire was started on vacant land behind the old Ames department store.

Last week, firefighters were called to put out two trash fires within 25 minutes, one in the alley behind Ironton Physical Fitness on Third Street and one in the alley behind Big Lots on Second Street.

"We are asking people that if they do see something going on to inform us before it escalates. These kinds of pranks can lead to more dangerous events," Runyon said.

Runyon said he suspects the trash fires were the work of juveniles. Those who have information may contact the fire department at 532-0043 or the Ironton Police Department at 532-2338.
