COAL GROVE - Even when he's not at his best, Michael Hill is still pretty good.

Hill didn't throw his best, but you could never tell by the numbers as he fired a one-hitter to lead the Fairland Dragons to a 3-0 shutout of the Coal Grove Hornets Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Hill struck out 15 and walked three as Fairland improved to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the OVC.

"Mike wasn't real sharp with his stuff, but he just knows how to pitch. I'll take that any time he pitches," Fairland coach Roger Snyder said.

Zach Huber led off the sixth inning with a single for the Hornets' only hit.

Fairland scored runs in the first, second and seventh innings.

In the first, Cory McKnight had a one-out double and Zacc Russell singled for a 1-0 lead.

Bo Adams singled with one out in the second, moved up on a fielder's choice and scored when Nick Zandel reached on an error, making it 2-0.

The final run in the seventh scored after Hill reached on an error, went to third when McKnight put down a sacrifice bunt and Boster followed with a double.

Adams went 3-3 and Russell 3-4 to pace Fairland's 11-hit attack. McKnight was 2-3 and Greg Boster 2-4.

Tommy Pemberton pitched well in a losing effort. Pemberton struck out 10, walked only one and two of the runs were unearned.

Pemberton struck out 15 in a 4-2 loss last Friday at River Valley.

"Tommy's pitched really well each time out, we're just not scoring any runs," Hornets coach John Jones said.

Coal Grove fell to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the OVC.
