HAVERHILL - As it turned out, it was more important how the Coal Grove Hornets started than how they finished.

Coal Grove jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and made it stand up for a 9-4 win Monday over the St. Joseph Flyers.

St. Joseph was hurt by five errors that

led to five unearned runs.

In the first inning, Bryan Bryant and Andrew Johnson singled, Tom Pemberton was safe on a dropped fly ball, and Nick Bazell was safe on an error as two runs scored. Patrick Roush singled in a run, Branch was safe on an error as a run scored, and Colton Hitchcock singled in a run.

The Flyers got a run back in the bottom of the inning. Kurt Jordan, Bart Joeckel and Cory Lewis all walked. Jordan scored when Lewis got caught in a rundown.

Alex Swarts singled, moved up when Joe O'Leary grounded out, Aaron Whaley singled, and Jordan and Joeckel walked as the Flyers scored in the second.

Each team scored a run in the third.

Roush and Hitchcock singled and Ryan Turvey reached on an error.

St. Joseph scored when Swarts reached on an error, stole second, and O'Leary had an RBI single.

The Flyers cut the deficit to 6-4 in the fourth. Whaley and Jordan were hit by pitches, Joeckel loaded the bases when he was safe on a fielder's choice, and Lewis hard an RBI single.

Coal Grove added two runs in the sixth when Turvey and Allen singled, Bryant reached on an error, and Andrew Johnson doubled in a pair.

The final Coal Grove run came around in the seventh when Roush singled, stole second, and Turvey singled.

Bryant got the win in relief with Pemberton picking up the save.

Coal Grove is 3-6 and St. Joseph is 0-8.
