Chesapeake erupts early, coasts past Flyers

HAVERHILL - One bad apple does spoil the whole bunch.

The Chesapeake Panthers used a big first inning to ignite an 11-0 win over the St. Joseph Flyers Tuesday.

"We just have one inning every game that we dig ourselves a hole and we can never get out of," Flyers coach Greg Bryant said.

The Panthers (7-2) had 10 hits to back the combined two-hit pitching of Phillip Butcher and Matt Whitmore.

Jeff Gilkison was 2-3 and Whitmore 2-4 to key the offense.

Alex Swarts and Joe O'Leary each went 1-2 for the Flyers only hits.

The six-run first inning started with P.J. Rase getting hit by a pitch. Benji Pyles walked and Justin Finley reached on a dropped fly ball as two scored. Finley stole second and came home on Gilkison's base hit.

After Gilkison stole second, Whitmore had an RBI single, Butcher walked, Tyler Marcum singled home a run and Zach Henderson walked to force home a run.

The Panthers added a run in the second when Finley doubled and scored on Butcher's ground out.

The lead went to 9-0 in the third inning.

Zach Henderson tripled, Rase walked and stole second and Pyles grounded out to score one run. Finley grounded out to score the second run.

The final two runs scored in the fourth.

Gilkison and Whitmore singled, Butcher hit into a fielder's choice and Marcum had an RBI single.

Henderson and Harris then walked to force home the final runs.St. Joseph, 0-9, hosts Portsmouth East Thursday.
