ASHLAND, Ky. - The St. Joseph Flyers must have liked getting their first win of the season so much, they turned right around and won their second.

The Flyers won their first two games of the season Monday with a 5-1, 8-2 sweep of the Rose Hill Royals Monday.

Ryan Waginger and Kurt Jordan each turned in strong pitching performances as the Flyers improved to 2-9 on the season.

Waginger threw a three-hitter as he struck out 11 and walked just one.

Jordan scattered six hits, struck out seven and walked only one in the five-inning second game.

"We played good defense and put the ball in play," Flyers coach Greg Bryant said. "Ryan Waginger threw a great game. He was ahead in the count the whole ball game.

"Kurt Jordan just threw strikes and did a nice job. We're getting better."

In the first game, the Flyers jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning.

Ryan Schwab was hit by a pitch, Cory Lewis walked and, after a double steal, Waginger was safe on an error as the runners scored.

Rose Hill got an unearned run in the fourth only to have the Flyers get the run back in the sixth when Waginger singled and Alex Swarts tripled.

The Flyers got two more runs in the seventh to seal the win.

Schwab singled, stole second and third. Jeremy Addis had an RBI single. Addis

swiped second and Waginger singled.

In the second game, the Flyers used a big fourth inning to snap a 1-1 tie and go on to win.

The Flyers went up 1-0 in the first inning. Swarts drew a two-out walk, stole second and scored on Waginger's base hit.

Rose Hill tied the game in the third, but the Flyers erupted for seven runs in the fourth inning.

Waginger and Lewis singled, pulled off a double steal, and Joe O'Leary singled them home. Addis doubled and Johnny Joeckel had a two-run single.

Jordan doubled, Roddy singled and the runners moved up on an overthrow. Swarts singled home the final run.

Waginger was 4-7 on the day while Swarts was 2-5.

The Flyers host Portsmouth Notre Dame Tuesday.
