Sands fires two-hitter in Ironton win

PORTSMOUTH - Second verse same as the first.

For the second straight time, Josh Sands threw a two-hitter as the Ironton Fighting Tigers beat the Boyd County (Ky.) Lions 5-3 Monday at the Ohio-Kentucky Athletic Conference

Sands struck out eight and walked just one. He threw 86 pitches, 60 being strikes.

"I felt pretty good. I like the (Portsmouth) mound," Sands said. "Everyone played pretty good defense behind me and we got the hits when we needed them."

Both Boyd County hits were off the bat of Brennan Sargent as he got singles in the third and fifth innings.

"Josh threw a heck of a game and we got some timely hitting," Ironton coach Mark Lewis said. "Boyd has had a great program for the past 15 years

The Fighting Tigers got on the scoreboard early with a run in the top of the first inning.

Sands singled, went to second on a base hit by Kevin Williams, to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dennis Gagai.

The lead went to 2-0 in the fourth inning.

Nick Collins doubled, moved up on a wild pitch and scored when Patrick Kouns was safe on an error.

Josh Adkins gave Sands some breathing room with a two-out solo home run in the fifth inning.

Boyd County (7-10) got its only run in the sixth inning thanks to an Ironton error.

Jake Hughes was safe on an error, stole second, went to third base on a one-out fly ball by C.J. Wamsley, then stole home.
