Chesapeake outlasts Symmes Valley, 22-16

CHESAPEAKE - If offense sells tickets, then this game would have been a sellout.

The Chesapeake Panthers and Symmes Valley Vikings combined for 28 hits and 38 runs in Tuesday's non-league game. The Panthers had 16 hits as they outscored the Vikings 22-16.

Symmes Valley scored three runs in the top of the first inning, but Chesapeake answered with a 13-run uprising.

The Panthers had seven hits including a two-run single and three-run triple by Jeff Gilkison. Matt Whitmore had a two-run double and P.J. Rase a two-run single in the 14-run first inning.

The Vikings got five runs in the second inning to trail 13-8 and two in the fourth to make it 13-10. Justin Finley belted a 3-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to put the Panthers up 16-10.

A six-run sixth inning enabled the Vikings to draw even, but Chesapeake got four runs and it was 20-16.

Gilkison finished 2-5 with five RBIs for the Panthers. Phillip Butcher, who picked up the pitching win, was 2-2, Zach Henderson 3-3, Benji Pyles 2-3, and P.J. Rase and Keith Marcum each went 2-5.

Symmes Valley, 7-4, had 12 hits led by Justin Holland who was 4-4 with five runs batted in. Chad Artrip was 2-4 and Chase Higgins 2-5.
