Ironton shifts into high gear

PEDRO - First, the Ironton Fighting Tigers changed gears. Next, they changed the outcome.

After losing Monday against a fastball pitcher, Ironton roared back to beat the Rock Hill Redmen 15-2 in five innings Tuesday.

"It took us a little while to shift gears. We saw a real good fastball pitcher (Monday) night, and then we see several pitchers who like to change speeds today. Once we got adjusted, we hit the ball pretty good," Ironton coach Mark Lewis said.

Ironton (10-8) collected 13 hits off four Rock Hill pitchers. Brigham Waginger, Patrick Kouns and Dustin Preston all homered and combined to drive in 11 runs.

Nick Collins (1-0) picked up the win as he went the first 3.2 innings. He struck out seven, walked four and gave up four hits. Greg Linn finished up.

"Nick threw well early and then he got a little tired. But he needs to get some work and build his arm strength and stamina after being off for so long," Lewis said.

Preston doubled in a run in the second inning for a 1-0 lead, but the Redmen tied the game in the bottom of the inning with an unearned run as Matt Wilson singled, a catcher's interference, and walks to Michael Williams and Brian Skaggs got Wilson home.

But Ironton erupted for five runs in the third inning to take the lead for good.

Josh Adkins was hit by a pitch. Josh Sands singled, Kouns walked, and Nick Collins had a two-run single. Preston

hit a sacrifice fly and Waginger followed with a two-run homer.

The Redmen got a run in the third inning on a walk to K.C. Christian, a single by Justin Lavender and a check swing infield single by Wilson.

The lead went to 9-2 in the fourth inning.

With one out, Adkins singled and scored on Sands' bloop double. Kouns singled home a run and then Collins, Preston and Waginger all walked to force in a run.

Ironton ended the game with a six-run fifth inning.

Kevin Williams singled, Adkins walked, Dennis Gagai had an RBI single, and Kouns hit a three-run homer. Collins singled and Preston followed with a two-run blast.
