GAHANNA - Good teams bring out the best in the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings.

Playing two of the top teams in the Columbus area, the Lady Vikings split a pair of games Saturday as they lost 3-0 to Gahanna and beat Bishop Hartley 4-2.

"We played exceptionally well in both games. We gave them two runs in the Gahanna game, and we have runners in scoring position three times and couldn't get a key hit," Lady Vikings coach Jeff "Odie" Estep said.

"Those were two good teams. These types of games will get us ready for the tournament."

The Lady Vikings lost a pitcher's duel in the first game. Lori Harmon took the loss despite striking out eight and walking only one.

Harmon got the win in the second game as she fired a two-hitter. She struck out nine and issued just one walk.

Symmes Valley jumped in front 2-0 in the first inning.

Cassie Myers walked, moved up on a fielder's choice, and scored on Kayla Bowman's base hit. A throwing error by the outfield sent Bowman to third, and a bad throw to third base allowed her to score.

In the third inning, Myers and Harmon singled and Bowman reached on an error as the run scored.

Jodi Black was safe on an error to start the sixth inning. Black moved to second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on a squeeze bunt by Brittany Scott.

Bowman went 2-3 in the second game and 3-6 on the day.

Symmes Valley, 13-4, hosts Russell, Ky., at 5 p.m. Monday.
