UNION TOWNSHIP - For Donnie Leffingwell, of Getaway, a short vacation was only a short distance from home - a very short distance.

"I bought this place just this year. I wanted a place to camp. I can canoe down from Getaway and go from here to the river," Leffingwell said.

Leffingwell and his friend, Bill Freeman of Linnville, camped late last week on his new strip of land on Symmes Creek along State Route 243, just north of Bradrick. The strip of land is flat with tall trees. Right now, the creek is alive with catfish as the fish are swimming in from the river to spawn, Leffingwell said.

"We've been fishing here since (Wednesday). We caught six or seven fish. One of them was 14 pounds."

Those catfish came in handy Thursday night - they were dinner.
