PROCTORVILLE - Little mistakes cause big problems.

The Fairland Lady Dragons made two costly errors that enabled the Wheelersburg Lady Pirates to post a 5-2 win Thursday in the Division III sectional softball tournament finals.

"We made mistakes tonight we haven't made all year," Fairland coach Leroy Baise said. "You can't make mistakes against good teams."

The mistakes led to three unearned runs.

Wheelersburg took a 2-0 lead in the third inning with a pair of unearned runs.

Brittany Glockner reached on an error, stole second and scored on Alyssa Weaver's base hit. Erica Faulkner tripled to drive in Weaver.

The Lady Pirates added a run in the fourth when Brittany Meenach hit an inside-the-park home run.

The lead went to 4-0 in the top of the fifth inning.

Weaver singled, stole second and came around to score on a throwing error.

Fairland cut the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the inning.

Allison Hager walked and then Megan Fisher, Kate Nida and Kristen Clausing all singled.

Wheelersburg added a run in the sixth when Sheila Floyd tripled and Brandy Etterling singled.

Faulkner got the win as she struck out nine and walked one. Megan Auxier took the loss despite allowing seven hits, striking out seven and not walking a batter.

Fisher went 3-4 while Nida and Clausing were 2-3 to lead the Lady Dragons offense.

Fairland finishes the season 16-7 and Ohio Valley Conference champions.

"I'm proud of our girls. No one thought we'd accomplish what we did. And our seniors did a great job," Baise said.
