Redwomen claim first sectional title

PEDRO - The first one is always the sweetest.

Winning their first-ever sectional championship, the Rock Hill Redwomen beat the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 6-1 in the Division III sectional finals Thursday.

"The girls played great. I was real proud of them. We played great defense and we hit the ball tonight," Redwomen coach Mary Harper said.

Bobbi Harper pitched a five-hitter to help the Redwomen claim the title.

After a scoreless first inning, Rock Hill got two runs with two outs in the second inning.

Shelli Harper singled, stole second and third and Mandy Estep had a triple. Melissa McFann singled home Estep.

The lead went to 5-0 in the third inning.

Marie Bamer singled, Cassie Chaffins put down a sacrifice bunt and was safe on an error and Rupp singled home both runners. Bobbi Harper put down a squeeze bunt to score Rupp.

Rock Hill got its final run in the fifth inning when Rupp doubled, took third on a wild pitch and Bobbi Harper had another squeeze bunt to score the run.

Chesapeake got its only run in the sixth inning.

Candace Dickerson and Jennifer Rice walked and Kristyn New singled to load the bases. Joanna Delimpo was hit by a pitch to score Dickerson, but the Redwomen turned a double play to end the game.

Rupp and Estep were 2-3 while Bamer was 2-4. New was 3-3 for the Panthers.

Rock Hill, 17-7, plays Wednesday at Lucasville in the district semifinals.
