49.

"When I think of the ideal person in every category, I think that would be Jan," fellow guidance counselor Sally Mills said. "She saw the best in everybody. If a situation came up, she would ask 'how can I make it better?' She had a positive attitude, even through her illness."

That sentiment was seconded by teacher Brenda McKee.

"She was a remarkable Christian lady who let her faith guide her and was a model for everyone around her," McKee said.

Mills said students were fond of Smith and would frequently ask about her when she was not at school.

A scholarship has been established in her memory by Smith's family. The first recipient of that scholarship will be named at the Sunday graduation exercises.

Smith was employed in the Symmes Valley School District before moving to the South Point District.

Funeral will be Wednesday in Huntington, W.Va.
