RUSSELL, Ky. - Runners from ages 7 to 78 converged on Russell Saturday morning to participate in the 27th annual Run By The River and helped establish new marks for participation and funds raised for community projects sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of East Greenup County.

"I'm excited about the turnout," race director Tim Gearhart said. "We have more runners than anytime in the last 15 years and more sponsors than anytime in the history of the run."

The result: the club expects to net $3,200 to $3,500 - all of which will be used to buy shoes for children, provide scholarships to Key Club members at Russell and Raceland-Worthington High Schools, Thanksgiving baskets for needy families and similar efforts.

Setting the pace in this year's field were two familiar runners: David Duncan and Blake Jones.

Duncan, 50, track and cross-country coach at Spring Valley High School in Huntington, took the top trophy in the 10K race while Blake Jones of Portsmouth repeated for the second year as the top speedster in the 5K division.

Duncan completed the 6.2 mile course in 36:52 just 22 second ahead of Eric Migernier, 44, of Huntington who turned in a 37:14 performance. Duncan was running the course at a 5:56 pace per mile while Migernier was just 4 second behind.

"I've always enjoyed this race," Duncan said, noting he was a winner several times in the 1970s and 1980s.

In the women's 10K, Tammy Tribett, 31, also of Huntington, took the top trophy with a time of 46:41. She was just 14 second ahead of Sarah Sturgill, 19, of Hurricane at 46:35.

In the 5K, Jones, 21, was more than a minute ahead of his nearest rival, Steven Peach, 19, of Portsmouth. Jones had a time of 17:42 (5:42 per mile) while Peach came in at 18:52 (6:05).

Emily Bailey, 18, of Kenova, W.Va. led the women's 5K with a time of 20:44, just 6 seconds ahead of Sarah Browning, 17, of Ashland, whose time was 20:50.

At starting time the number of registered runners stood at 160, an increase of 48 over last year. Of those registered ,151 completed the 5K or 10K course while several others participated in a 5K fun walk.

Planning is already underway for next year's

race which will be Saturday, June 11, with the addition of a new age division for those 70 and over.

After noting an ever increasing number of older citizens still running, race sponsors decided it was time to recognize that people are living longer and healthier.

"I think this will add a new dimension to our race that others will soon follow," said Gearhart.
