SOUTH POINT - Boom! It was over just like that.

Using its quick-strike capabilities, the Ironton Fighting Tigers raced to a 55-0 lead and went on to beat the South Point Pointers 57-6 Friday night.

Led by senior halfback Marcus Williams with four touchdowns, Ironton went up 41-0 with eight minutes left in the first half and then turned the rest of the night over to the backups.

"We were able to execute what we wanted to do, and when you execute like that the plays are going to work," Ironton coach Bob Lutz said. "We were able to take advantage of what they gave us and we hit some big plays."

Less than 20 seconds into the game, Ironton's Shane Kerns picked off a long Chris Smith pass at the Pointers 38. Two plays later Williams raced 50 yards for a touchdown. Greg Igo kicked the first of his six extra points and it was 7-0 at the 11:05 mark.

The Pointers ran three plays and punted. Williams cradled the punt at the 35 and ran it back for touchdown and it was 13-0.

Another punt gave the ball to Ironton at its own 42. Quarterback Josh Adkins hit Shane Kerns with a long scoring pass on the ensuing play and the lead was 20-0.

"I kind of slowed down because I thought it was going to be short, but it wasn't and I took off. (The South Point defender) took my shoe but I still scored," Kerns said.

Ironton (2-0) got the ball back three plays later and used a 34-yard pass from Adkins to Patrick Kouns to set up a 9-yard scoring run by Williams and it was 27-0.

Williams got his fourth score on a 19-yard run one a fourth-and-inches on the first play of the second quarter.

Chad Miller got an interception to set up the next Ironton score. A 33-yard run by Eric Layne put the ball deep in South Point territory and Andrew Walker scored on an 11-yard run for a 41-0 lead.

The second team offense took over and Miller had a pair of scoring runs as the lead grew to 55-0.

South Point (0-2) got on the scoreboard when Smith hit Jerrell Dean on a 68-yard pass play with 43 seconds left in the half.

A safety was the only scoring in the second half.

Lutz said the defense played well against the Pointers spread offense.

"We knew going in their quarterback had a good arm and they liked to throw it all over the place," Lutz said.

"We made some adjustments to take away the passing lanes and put some heat on quarterback. Other than one or two passes, we pretty much shut their offense down."

South Point finished with minus 59 yards rushing. Smith was 13-22 for 164 yards, but he was intercepted three times and only 57 of his passing yards came against the first team defense.

Despite the loss, Pointers head coach Dan McDavid was proud of the effort by his young team against the traditional powerhouse.

"We played a quality team with a Hall of Fame coach. They're the real deal," McDavid said.

"I was pleased with the effort of our young kids. They kept hustling. An example was Jacob Orlando who took a hard hit and came right back and caught a pass. We'll come back and get back to work next week."
