WAYNE, W.Va. - It's the little things that mean a lot.

A penalty here, a fumble there, it all adds up and the sum isn't good. So says Chesapeake coach Phil Davis after a 22-8 loss Friday to the Wayne Pioneers.

"We had some drives going and little things happened that cost us," Davis said. "The kids grew up a little bit and Caleb (McComas) played really well."

In his second game as the Panthers starting quarterback, McComas was 11 of 17 passing for 127 yards and an interception and ran nine times for 55 yards in a losing effort.

Wayne (2-0) racked up 293 yards rushing and 361 total yards. Chesapeake finished with 260 total yards.

"Wayne was a quality team, but we had a chance to win it and we didn't do it. That was the most disappointing thing," Davis said. "Our kids played really, really hard."

The first half was scoreless until a deflected pass was caught by Trevor Marcum for a touchdown with one minute left in the half and it was 8-0.

Chesapeake tied the game on a 35-yard run by McComas with 9:20 left in the third quarter. McComas passed to Jackson Caynor for the conversion to tie the game.

The Pioneers snapped the tie with 8:50 to play on a a 37-yard touchdown pass from Nate Newell to Jake Gilliam when a Chesapeake defender slipped and fell. The conversion failed and it was 14-8.

Wayne got an insurance score with a little more than a minute left on an 8-yard rush by Josh Powers.
