Junior Hornets open season with overtime victory

CANNONSBURG, Ky. - The Coal Grove Junior Hornets opened the season with a thrilling come-from-behind overtime win Thursday over the Boyd County Wildcats, 22-14.

Boyd County took an 8-0 lead on the first play of the game and went up 14-0 three plays into its next possession.

But Coal Grove regained its composure and went 65 yards in 12 plays to score on Nathan Gully's 7-yard run and it was 14-6.

The "Black Attack" defense allowed only 56 yards the final three quarters to enable the offense a chance to rally.

The Hornets tied the game at 14-14 with 2:30 remaining on a 5-yard scoring pass from Shannon Goodwin to Aaron Dickess. Chris Brammer threw to Dickess on the conversion to tie the game.

Coal Grove went on offense to start the overtime and Gully scored on a 1-yard fourth down run. Frank Delawder added the conversion run.

The defense stopped the Wildcats offense to preserve the win.

Gully had 10 carries for 66 yards to lead the offense. Brammer had 55 yards on nine tries and Delawder had eight attempts for 45 yards.

Coal Grove hosts Russell, Ky., Thursday.
