PROCTORVILLE - It was a day for runners.

The first annual Fairland Run By The River cross country meet featured runners from both high school and junior high Saturday.

South Point edged Fairland 44 to 46 in the boys high school meet, while Fairland took the junior meet with 16 points to runner-up Rock Hill's 46 points.

"Our junior high stepped up. The high school team did what they needed. They ran their best times of the year," Fairland coach Chuck Wentz said.

The top runner overall was Fairland's Chuck Wentz, son of the head coach, who ran an 18.39 time.

Chris Derling of Coal Grove ran a 19:29 to place second followed by Adam Slone of Chesapeake (19:31) and Andy Burgess of South Point (19:32).

In the girls' high school meet, Kylie Lemons of Spring Valley had the best time at 22:12 while Veronica Perko of Chesapeake ran a 24:31.

In the junior high meet, Kimi Swisher of Meigs (15:45) won the girls meet with Amy Lien of South Point second.

Chase Sifford of Fairland (15:13) took first place in the boys meet followed by teammates Wayne Moore, Logan Froelich and Christian Burke.
