Ironton girls deal BC 1st loss

So much for the undefeated.

The Boyd County (Ky.) Lady Lions entered Tuesday's volleyball match 14-0, but left with their first loss as the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers took a straight sets win.

Seniors Sarah Cartmell, Andrea Rudmann and Ali Markins led Ironton with solid all-around performances.

Cartmell had 19 points including 14 aces to go along with 9 kills, 5 digs and 3 blocks. Rudmann had 8 points - 6 aces - plus 12 kills, 11 assists, 5 digs and 3 blocks.

Markins got 6 points and 3 digs, Mandi Boykin 9 points and 11 assists, while Sara Hacker added 6 points and Tracy Mays one.

In the junior varsity match, Ironton won in straight sets 25-7, 25-12.

Nikki Harbolt had 16 points including 11 aces, Rachel Walker contributed 3 points and four kills, Jessica Weaver had 6 points, Kayla Wileman 8 points (7 aces), Kelly Cochran 6 points and Allison Hicks 2 points.

Ironton plays at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Wayne, 5:30 p.m. Tuesday against Jackson, and 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Portsmouth.
