Ironton golfers notch four wins

PINE GROVE - Back on the course and back to winning.

After rain washed out a couple of matches last week, the Ironton Fighting Tigers golf team returned to action and picked up four wins against just one loss.

Ironton beat Russell (Ky.) and Ashland (Ky.) last Tuesday at Diamond Links before the rains hit. Ironton had a 168 team score with Russell posting a 173 and Ashland 182.

Dennis Gagai was the medalist with a 2 over par 38. Seth Christian fired a 41, Gavin Harbolt had a 43 and Jay Rudmann 46. Also playing for Ironton were Nick Boggess at 47 and Seth Haynes at 50.

Michael Bradley of Russell shot a 40 to finish as runner-up to Gagai for medalist honors in the quad match.

The Fighting Tigers returned to action Monday with a quad match at the Ironton Country Club.

Greenup County (Ky.) won the match with a 159 score with Ironton second at 167. South Point shot a 173 and Ashland carded a 178.

"We just need to play. The rain knocked us out of some matches and the rust showed," Ironton coach Jeff Kerns said.

Christian took medalist honors for Ironton in the quad match as he finished with a 3 over par 38. Rudmann was next with a 42, Harbolt had a 43, Gagai 44. Boggess shot s 46 and Haynes 50.

"Jay and Gavin both are continuing to play well, and Seth Christian is starting to play to his potential again. We need to get everyone on the same page for the tournament," Kerns said.

Justin Lewis and Andy Ray each shot a 39 to lead South Point. Kyle Hughes had a 46, Josh Jones 49 and Chase McWhorter 50 for the Pointers.

Zach Gilliam of Greenup was the medalist at 37.

Ironton, 35-12 overall, hosts Portsmouth at 5 p.m. Thursday. Fans are invited to attend any matches.
