PROCTORVILLE - Nothing to it.

The Coal Grove Hornets rallied from behind twice, the second comeback score coming with one second left as they got past the Fairland Dragons in a 42-41 Ohio Valley Conference thriller Friday night.

"I'm really proud of our kids. The kids are really working hard. They're trying to win," Hornets coach Dave Lucas said. "But Fairland has got good athletes. They're really explosive. They came out ready to play."

First, the Hornets fell behind the Dragons 21-0 in the first quarter. The Hornets climbed back in the game but still trailed 33-20 heading into the fourth quarter.

Coal Grove got two scores early in the fourth quarter and went ahead 34-33. But Fairland answered with a touchdown and took a 41-34 lead.

That set up the dramatic finish.

With the aid of a couple of penalties on the Dragons, Coal Grove drove 90 yards in 12 plays for the touchdown. Eric Davidson hit Patrick Roush with a 6-yard scoring toss with 1.6 seconds to play and Justin Hyland ran for the winning conversion.

Lucas praised his players for their poise and desire, especially Davidson who came on when starting quarterback Ryan Turvey was injured.

"I talked to our quarterback and just told him we're going to have to throw the ball down the field and he stood in there," Lucas said. "And Justin refused to go down. Patrick Roush made two big plays and Tyler Sexton made a big catch to keep the drive moving."

Fairland attempted a lateral pass on the kickoff and the ball landed on the ground where the Hornets Justin Allen recovered to seal the victory.

The Dragons jumped in front 21-0 the first quarter as quarterback Michael Hill threw touchdown passes of 11 and 43 yards to Todd Maynard. Adam Fuller returned a fumble 46 yards for the third score.

Coal Grove finally got on the scoreboard when Hyland ran 4 yards with 9:41 left in the half. Hyland added a second 4-yard TD run plus the conversion and it was 21-14.

But on the first play following the touchdown, Hill teamed up with Sam Huff on a 75-yard scoring pass and it was 27-14.

A punt return by Gary Moore to the Fairland 29 set up Hyland's 7-yard scoring run in the third quarter that cut the deficit to 27-20.

The Dragons answered with a quick three-play, 63-yard drive capped by a 20-yard pass from Hill to Huff.

Hyland had touchdown runs of 1 and 4 yards in the fourth quarter that gave Coal Grove a 34-33 lead with 8:21 to play.

But Fairland came right back with a 63-yard drive in just three plays as Hill scooted 30 yards for the go ahead scored. He ran for the conversion and it was 41-34 with 6:44 left.

After an exchange of punts, the Hornets then got the ball back with 1:08 to play and began their winning drive.

"The kids did a nice job of managing the clock and hustling to the line of scrimmage," Lucas said.

Coal Grove improved to 5-2 and 2-0 in the OVC. Fairland fell to 1-6 and 0-2.

Hyland finished with 266 yards on 44 carries. Brian Massie added 88 yards on 12 attempts as the Hornets rushed for 356 yards.

Hill completed 21 of 46 passes for 429 yards.

Huff had two interceptions for the Dragons.
