CHESHIRE - In a game where the offense gained 400 yards, it was the defense that got the game ball.

Limiting River Valley to under 200 total yards, the Fairland Dragons rolled past the Raiders 34-6 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

River Valley (1-8, 1-3) had just 182 total yards including just 43 through the air.

"The defense play well," Dragons coach Brent Wilcoxon said. "Deryk Neal and Brad Malone did a great job on the defensive line. Once (Michael) Hill and (Sam) Huff got in sync early on and made it tough and River Valley never regrouped.

"I thought Adam Fuller did a tremendous job running the ball in the fourth quarter."

Neal finished with 11 tackles and three sacks at defensive tackle.

Wilcoxon said Wes Ripley also played well defensively. He said Ripley "didn't have the stats, but he did everything he was supposed to do."

Fairland (2-7, 1-3) rushed for 178 yards while Hill completed 13 of 22 attempts for 222 yards. Huff had seven receptions for 158 yards.

Fuller had 117 yards on 19 carries to led the ground game.

After a scoreless first quarter, Fairland drove 73 yards on nine plays capped by Malone's 1-yard run. Hill kicked the point after for a 7-0 lead.

The Raiders only touchdown came on a 22-yard interception return by Jason Jones that cut the lead to 7-6 with 4:18 left in the third quarter. But then Fairland answered with a 65-yard pass play from Hill to Huff and the lead was 14-6 with under a minute to play in the quarter.

Allen Maynard blocked a punt and Ripley recovered early in the fourth quarter and Fairland was back in business at the Raiders 24. Two plays later, Hill connected with Ripley on a 24-yard scoring strike and the lead was 21-6.

A defensive stop gave Fairland the ball at the 39. Two plays later, Hill scrambled for a 34-yard touchdown run and it was 27-6 with 4:26 to play.

Neal recovered a fumble at the Dragons 27 and Fairland went 73 yards in six plays capped by Fuller's 26-yard TD run to cap the scoring.
