Redmen drub Dragons

PEDRO - Brian Skaggs kept getting in the way, and K.C. Christian stayed out of the way.

Skaggs got in the way of the Fairland Dragons passing game as he had three of Rock Hill's four interceptions, and Christian avoided tacklers all night as he ran 19 times for 303 yards and three touchdowns in the Redmen 40-0 Ohio Valley Conference win Friday.

"Brian played really well. He made good drops and made great plays on the ball. He just came out as

senior and he's starting to et in the flow of it," Redmen coach Todd Knipp said.

Fairland actually held Rock Hill to negative yardage in the first quarter, but the Redmen finished with 459 total yards.

"I was pleased with the execution of our offense. Defensive coach Barry Litteral and the staff did a great job preparing for Fairland's passing attack. The kids played hard and forced turnovers when they had to," Knipp said.

"We wanted them to run the ball. We wanted them to beat us with their legs and not their arms. Our kids stepped up and played pretty well after we got going."

The Dragons were inside the 5-yard line five times and failed to score. Three of the drives ended in turnovers.

Besides Skaggs, Jarrod Casey had the other Rock Hill interception in the end zone to stop a first quarter threat.

The Redmen, 3-5 and 2-1 in the OVC, also got 111 yards on 23 carries from halfback T.J. Blagg who ran for one score and caught a touchdown pass from Casey.

After a scoreless first quarter, Rock Hill went 76 yards in 12 plays capped by the 19-yard Casey to Blagg pass and it was 6-0.

"We started running right at them and found some success and stayed right with it," Knipp said.

Skaggs first interception came moments later as he returned the pick 13 yards to the Fairland 19. Three plays later Blagg scored on a 4-yard run. Casey hit Christian with a conversion pass and it was 14-0.

On the ensuing series, Skaggs picked off Fairland quarterback Michael Hill in virtually the same spot and ran the ball 14 yards to the 34. Christian scored on the next play and it was 20-0 with 51 seconds left in the half.

Christian returned the second half kickoff 44 yards to the Fairland 46 and six plays later fullback David Steven bulled into the end zone from 6 yards out. Matt McFann's conversion kick extended the lead to 27-0.

Fairland drove inside the 5-yard line only to have a fourth-and-goal play result in a 5-yard loss as Rock Hill took over on downs at the 8. Two plays later, Christian bolted 90 yards for a touchdown and McFann's kick pushed the lead to 34-0.

The Dragons had yet another drive stall late in the game at the 8 and Christian raced 71 yards for the touchdown to end a 92-yard, seven-play drive with 2:31 to play.

Despite the lopsided loss, Fairland still had 302 yards of total offense. But instead of its usual passing numbers, 210 yards came on the ground as Fuller and Hill each ran for 90 yards. Hill was just 8 of 23 passing for 92 yards and suffered the four interceptions.

Things that started well turned sour all night for the Dragons.

Allen Maynard blocked a punt on the first series and Wes Ripley recovered at the 32. Fairland drove to the 3 but fumbled and McFann recovered for the Redmen.

Fairland had another drive in the quarter end when Skaggs came up with an interception at the 2-yard line.

In the second quarter, Fairland fumbled at the 23 and Justin Lavender recovered for the Redmen. However, Fuller then got an interception of his own for Fairland

and returned the ball to the 40. Hill hit Sam Huff on a 26-yard pass down to the Rock Hill 23, but two passes fell incomplete and time ran out in the first half.

Fairland fell to 1-7 and 0-3 in the OVC.
