Area teams closer to home in second round

A little closer to home this time.

Instead of making a second round trip nearly four hours away, the Ironton Fighting Tigers will meet the New Albany Eagles at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Ohio University's Peden Stadium in the Division IV Region 15 semifinals.

Ironton, 10-1, played Bellaire at Zanesville last season when a more equal geographical site wasn't available. The Ohio University site is virtually an equal distance for both schools.

"Peden Stadium is a nice facility," Ironton coach Bob Lutz said. "But at this stage, the site isn't that important. The main concern is about having a chance to play another game and, hopefully, winning and moving on to the next round."

The Symmes Valley Vikings, 9-1, will have their shortest road trip in five playoff appearances. The Vikings face Newark Catholic (9-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Chillicothe High School in the Division VI Region 23 semifinals.

Symmes Valley played its first round game at Newark Catholic two years ago with the Green Wave winning 14-7.

The Wheelersburg Pirates play at 7 p.m. Saturday at Circleville High School in the Division V Region 19 semifinals.

The Pirates (10-1) face unbeaten Johnstown Monroe (11-0). Monroe actually lost to Licking Valley in week two, but the Johnnies were awarded a 1-0 forfeit win.
