Using superb team play, the Chesapeake Lady Panthers had 18 assists and 41 rebounds as they knocked off the Portsmouth Lady Trojans 49-35 Saturday night for their first win of the season.

Sara Rucker had 12 points and six rebounds and Brittany Boyle got 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists to lead the Lady Panthers, 1-2.

"We just played more team ball. It showed in our assists. We had 18 and the last game we had four," Chesapeake coach John McClung said.

"Sara Rucker did a good job in the post. We gave her more touches and that opened it up outside. We did a good job as a whole team hitting the boards."

Rucker scored 5 points in the first quarter and Brittney Boyle hit a 3-pointer as the Lady Panthers took a 14-7 lead.

Each team scored 12 points in the second quarter and Chesapeake was up 26-19 at the break.

Portsmouth started to make a run in the third quarter, but Boyle hit a key 3-pointer to stop the spurt and Chesapeake pulled away to a 38-27 lead after three quarters.

"Boyle and (Candace) Dickerson are getting better and better taking care of the ball. Brittney Sowards and Rucker both gave us a good effort, and Veronica Perko didn't score but she played good defense," McClung said.

Tonya McKenzie had 14 points and Brya Coleman 12 to lead the Lady Trojans, 0-1.
