NEW BOSTON - There won't be an 0-7 start this season.

The South Point Lady Pointers made sure there would be no repeat of last season's start as they began this season with a resounding 71-49 rout of the New Boston Lady Tigers Monday night.

"Last year we started oh-and-forever, so it's nice to get a win. Our schedule early is really tough," South Point coach Dave Adams said.

PIKETON - The Coal Grove Lady Hornets cut the Piketon Lady Redstreaks down to size.

Facing a lineup with players 6-foot-2, 6-foot and 5-11, the Lady Hornets downed Piketon 47-43 Tuesday.

"It was a good win for us," Hornets coach Nick Miller said. "We played good defense. They had some big kids and we were on the road. We did a good job with their height."

Chelsea Markins led Coal Grove with 17 points. Samantha Hall added 7 points.

Coal Grove (2-0) led just 6-4 after the first quarter but extended the lead to 23-17 at the half.

Hall picked up her third foul in second quarter and was forced to sit out for nearly two quarters. Markins got her third foul in the third quarter and sat down for part of the period.

"We had to play part of the game without Hall and Markins, but the other girls stepped it up. Tracy Tackett played well," Miller said.

After each team scored 10 points in the third quarter, Markins scored 7 points in the fourth quarter as the Lady Hornets held on for the win.

"They were double and triple teaming Chelsea early and she found other people. She was able to get open in the fourth quarter and hit some big shots," Miller said.

Coal Grove was just 2 of 10 from the foul line the first half, but converted 14 of 24 the second half.

The Lady Hornets also picked up a win in the junior varsity game.
