Hornets turn back Flyers

You could say the Coal Grove Hornets had a reversible game plan.

Coal Grove turned a perimeter game into a game in the paint as they beat Ironton St. Joseph 62-44 Tuesday and spoiled the coaching debut of the Flyers Kevin Hacker.

"We wanted to work from the inside out," Hornets coach Darrell Humphreys said.

"As the game went on, we went to the glass hard. We told the kids that the team who hits the boards is going to win. They got the lead with second-chance baskets. When we got the lead it was when we got second-chance baskets."

St. Joseph jumped out to a 7-2 lead and was up 16-10 at the end of the first quarter as Alex Swarts scored 8 points and Jeremy Addis hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer from near halfcourt.

But after shooting 7 of 15 from the field the first quarter, the Flyers shot just 8 of 35 the rest of the game.

"It turned into a physical game," Hacker said. "The first quarter was more our style. We ran our offense great the first quarter and decent in the second quarter. The second half we went away from it when we got in foul trouble."

A four-point play by Randy Wise and three foul shots by Justin Hyland gave Coal Grove a 17-16 lead. The lead changed hands twice and then Hyland followed up a missed shot and later hit two free throws to put the Hornets up 21-18. The lead was 26-20 and then Ryan Staton sank a foul shot and Ryan Schwab hit a layup just before the half and the Flyers trailed 26-23 at the break.

A 3-point play by Michael Basedow with 4:57 to play in the third quarter to draw the Flyers within 34-31, but Coal Grove went on an 8-3 run to end the quarter and it was 42-36.

"Hyland changed the game defensively. He stepped up in the second half and got us charged up. Down the stretch, Randy Wise did what a point guard is suppose to do," Humphreys said.

St. Joseph shot only 2 for 15 from the field in the fourth quarter and the Hornets converted 8 of 16 shots from the line. Coal Grove's biggest lead was 59-44 with 1:53 to lay.

Wise led Coal Grove (1-1) with 19 points, Hyland had 16 points and 11 rebounds, Jimmy Lemon scored 17 points and had eight rebounds.

Swarts topped the Flyers with 13 points and seven rebounds despite sitting out in foul fouble. Ryan Schwab had nine points and Staten five rebounds.
