Female Flyers can#039;t hold lead against Tartans

SCIOTOVILLE - A Tale of Two Halves.

The first half of Wednesday's game belonged to the St. Joseph Female Flyers. Unfortunately, the second half and eventually the game belonged to the Portsmouth East Lady Tartans.

St. Joseph had a 7-point halftime lead and was up by as many as 10 points before East rallied to outscore the Female Flyers 28-9 in the second half.

"We played well the first half, but they got the momentum the second half. We were aggressive the first half and then played tentative the second half," Female Flyers coach B.J. Hannon said.

Christina Harvey had 18 points to lead St. Joseph. East was paced by Sonya Mantell and Shawna Williams with 13 points each and Bridgette Baer with 12.

Raven Blake, Danielle Blair and Harvey all scored as St. Joseph opened up an 8-2 lead to start the game. Blair hit another shot to make it 10-4. Morrison hit a 3-pointer and scored with 13 seconds left and it was 10-9.

Harvey and Blair hit baskets to start the second quarter and it was 14-9. Blake had another basket and Harvey sank one of two free throws for a 19-11 lead with 3:50 left in the half.

Harvey scored inside and then sank two free throws for a 23-13 lead. Morrison's 3-pointer just before the end of the half got East within 23-16 at the break.

Blake scored at the 7:25 mark to start the second half for a 25-16 lead, but East went on a 6-0 run and trailed 25-22.

put the Flyers up 27-22 only to have East score 7 unanswered points. Bridgette Baer hit two baskets and a three-point lay by Sonya Mantell to take a 29-27 lead.

Harvey's 3-pointer at the 1:23 mark gave St. Joseph a 30-29 lead. East got a basket before the end of the quarter and led 31-30.

In the fourth quarter, East scored the first 7 points and extended its lead to 38-30. Harvey got the only St. Joseph goal with 5:02 left to play and it was 38-32. Baer had two baskets and Morrison scored with 1:29 left as East scored the final 6 points of the game.

"We were still in the game until late in the fourth quarter. We had chances, we just couldn't score," Hannon said.

St. Joseph plays at Rose Hill at 6 p.m. Friday.
