Ironton to honor Final Four cage teams

Remember those Final Four days? If not, you’ll get the chance.

The Ironton High School athletic department will honor its Final Four basketball team on separate dates.

The boys 1993-94 basketball team was the first Ironton boys team to advance to the state tournament. It will be honored on Dec. 28 when the Fighting Tigers host future SEOAL opponent Zanesville.

Ironton began the tournament with an 8-9 record and won its first five tournament games before falling 65-62 to Wauseon in the state semifinals.

Team members were Jermon Jackson, Tom Kelley, Sean Southers, Ryan Guthrie, J.J. King, David Hankins, Jason Click, Cary Williams, Damon Pringle, Mike Freeman, Scott Beasley, Marq Davis, Pat Mahlmeister, Travis Wylie, Mark White and Troy Sands.

Head coach was Phil Rice. Assistants were Paul Fugitt and Chris Barnes.

The girls 1979-80

team that reached the state tournament will be honored on Jan. 17 when the Lady Tigers host Russell, Ky.

Ironton's 1979-80 squad is the only girls team in Lawrence County to ever advance to the state tournament.

Team members were Kim Howard, Debby Norris, Jeanette Vinson, Jayna Riggs, Beth Ann Rist, Lauren Triplett, Janet Walker, Teresa Sweeney, Lisa Bryant, Cheryl Swartzwelder and Kim Lattimer.

Head coach was Doris Hannon.

Ironton finished 22-3 and lost 53-47 to West Lafayette Ridgewood in the state semifinals..
