PROCTORVILLE - Bad play but a good sign.

Despite a poor performance, the Fairland Dragons battled past the scrappy Rock Hill Redmen 50-44 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Coming off a near upset of Jackson, Fairland gave a sub-par showing that had head coach Chad Belville scratching his head.

"We didn't play with the same intensity we did against Jackson. Rock Hill played really hard. They played harder than we did," Belville said.

"It was a good sign that our kids were unhappy with their play but they found a way to win. They played well Tuesday and lost, but they were more upset tonight because they didn't play well and won."

The Redmen went ahead 5-2 to start the game before Fairland battled back to take an 8-7 lead at the end of the quarter as Todd Maynard scored 4 points.

Fairland went on a 15-1 run to lead 23-8 when Rock Hill finally turned the momentum and cut the deficit to 21-17 as K.C. Christian hit a pair of foul shots just before the half.

"We started getting into a rhythm and pressuring them with our defense. But our offense let them back into the game because we didn't get the shots we wanted," Belville said.

"And to be truthful, Rock Hill missed a lot of wide-open layups."

Zach Pemberton had 5 points in the third quarter and Brian Skaggs scored 4 points for the Redmen as each team scored 11 points and it was 34-28.

"Zach did a tremendous job," Belville said.

In the fourth quarter, Christian hit a 3-pointer - he scored 8 points in the quarter - that got the Redmen within 43-39. But Kyle Wise hit a 3-pointer to push the lead to 46-39 with just two minutes to play.

"That was a huge shot by Kyle," Belville said.

Maynard led the Dragons (2-8, 1-2) with 16 points. Zach Pemberton had 12 points and four rebounds and Daniel Spears pulled down five rebounds. Travis Cardwell had four assists and Spears three.

"I thought Todd Maynard did a good job with his shot selections."

Christian had 16 points and seven rebounds to lead the Redmen (3-7, 0-4).
