Ironton puts clamps on T-Wolves

Andrea Rudmann didn't know she had hit it. The Spring Valley Lady Timberwolves didn't know what hit them.

Rudmann scored her 1,000th career point and the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers shut down the Spring Valley offense in a 51-37 win Thursday.

Rudmann, a 5-foot-9 senior guard, made a layup with 5:58 left in the game that not only pushed Ironton's lead to 38-27 but gave her a career milestone.

"I had no clue I had 1,000 points. I was just playing," Rudmann said. "My parents didn't even tell me how many points I had, but some of the kids at school told me. I'm happy it's over with."

But Rudmann's personal accomplishment took a back seat to Ironton's 14th win in 15 games and a defensive effort that limited Spring Valley to 29.4 percent shooting from the field including just 2 of 17 from 3-point range.

"We held them to single digits in three quarters and under 40 points for the game. That's pretty good. They just beat Beckley and they're a good team," Ironton coach Amy Hughes said.

Rudmann, who has already signed with Shawnee State, had 17 points and six rebounds. Sara Hacker finished with 14 points and eight rebounds while Mandi Boykin had 8 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

The game was tied 6-6 early when Rudmann hit back-to-back baskets to give Ironton the lead for good at 10-6.

A 6-0 run in the second quarter including a 3-point play by Jessica Waddle gave Ironton its biggest lead of the first half at 18-11.

Boykin hit a 6-footer with 28 seconds left in the half and the Lady Fighting Tigers were up 22-15 at the break.

Spring Valley (6-5) got within 25-19 with 5:40 left in the third quarter, but Ironton used a 3-point play by Sarah Cartmell and then a layup by Cartmell off a pass from Danielle Henderson that put the lead at 36-23.

Jen Wiles and Jessi Bailey scored to begin the fourth quarter as the Lady Timberwolves within 36-27.

But Rudmann's milestone layup and 19-footer expanded the lead to 40-27 with 5:24 to play and Ironton's lead was never less than 10 the rest of the game.

"It's nice to get 1,000 points, but it's been a team effort," Rudmann said. "I've been fortunate to play with a lot of good players during my career, and this season is no different."

Ironton plays Rose Hill at Boyd County at 12:45 p.m. Saturday.

In the reserve game, Spring Valley won 30-20. Kayla Wileman scored 10 points for Ironton.
