COAL GROVE - The shots wouldn't fall, but fortunately for the Coal Grove Lady Hornets, their opponent finally did.

On a night when both teams had trouble shooting, the Lady Hornets held on for a 33-29 Ohio Valley Conference win Monday.

"It wasn't a badly played game, it was just both teams struggled to score," Lady Hornets coach Nick Miller said. "Rock Hill is playing better. I was worried about this one."

Rock Hill came into the game with only one win but led 8-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Redwomen scored only one point in the second quarter as Coal Grove rallied to take a 14-9 halftime lead.

Redwomen coach Matt Fulks praised the defensive efforts of his team, especially Katrina Settle, Michelle Pancake and Mandi McKenzie.

"We had that bad second quarter again," Fulks said. "Settle and Pancake did a nice job guarding Chelsea Markins, and McKenzie did a pretty good job on (Samantha) Hall.

"We had some good looks at the basket, we just couldn't knock them down."

Markins finished with 14 points to lead Coal Grove (9-6, 3-3) and Hall scored 12 including 9 in the second half.

Brooke Long and Settle topped Rock Hill (1-10, 0-6) with 8 points each.

Coal Grove led 24-20 after three quarters.

Hall had 7 points in the fourth quarter and the Lady Hornets were 4 of 6 from the foul line over the final two minutes to seal the win.

The Lady Hornets bounced back after losing 50-38 at Federal Hocking on Saturday.

"We didn't play well Saturday, so it was nice to come back with any kind of a win," Miller said.
