The Ironton St. Joseph Female Flyers calmed down enough Thursday to keep the Wayne (W.Va.) Lady Pioneers winless.

St. Joe jumped out to an early lead and hung on to defeat Wayne 44-30. The Female Flyers never trailed in the game and improved their record to 7-9. Wayne fell to 0-14.

"We're pleased with the win," coach B.J. Hannon said. "Wayne is a much bigger school than us, so it was a nice win."

Sophomore forward Raven Blake led the Female Flyers with 18 points, with senior center Christina Harvey adding 13.

Tiffany White, a sophomore guard, led all Wayne scorers with 14.

The first quarter saw the Female Flyers jump out to a 12-3 lead with Harvey doing the bulk of the scoring. After Wayne's first basket, the Pioneers began to press the Female Flyers with 2:12 left in the first quarter.

But St. Joe extended its lead by two points to end the half at 22-11.

Wayne's press remained ineffective until the third quarter when the Female Flyers began to turn the ball over.

Wayne went on a 14-10 run in the third quarter capped off with a 3-point basket by White with 10 seconds left to make the score 32-25.

"We were too anxious in the third quarter," Hannon said. "We just threw the ball away too much."

Wayne's pressure had cut the lead to 38-30 with 3:20 left in the game. That's when Hannon called timeout to regroup.

"We just told our girls to calm down," Hannon said.

The timeout worked as the Female Flyers kept Wayne scoreless for the last three minutes of the game and began to pass the ball more effectively and spread the floor.

Blake helped put the Pioneers away with 8 of her points in the final quarter.
