Ironton police make arrests in stolen car cases

Two men who allegedly tried to put the five-finger discount to other people's cars wound up with only handcuffs to show for their efforts.

Ben Smith, 26, of 420 Lawrence St., and Ryan Cooper, 26, of 703 Walnut St., were each arrested this week and charged with theft in two separate incidents.

Smith was arrested Monday night after Ironton police were summoned to the Moose Lodge parking lot.

"The 2000 Honda Civic was parked on the lot and the owner came out and caught someone with his car and held him until officers arrived," detective Jim Akers said.

Also Monday,

a resident in the 400 block of North Second Street told authorities someone had stolen

their 1992 Chevrolet Blazer. Cooper was later stopped in the 800 block of Park Avenue, allegedly driving the vehicle.

Police also have filed charges against a 15-year-old boy who allegedly stole a .380 Colt semi-automatic pistol.

Akers said the teen stole the gun Saturday from the parents of his friends while he was visiting the residence. The gun was later recovered from the backyard of a residence in the 2500 block of South 11th Street.

The youth faces one count of fourth-degree felony theft of firearm.
