Lady Fighting Tigers complete record season

Coach Amy Hughes said her seniors Andrea Rudmann and Sarah Cartmell were special. Together with their Ironton Lady Fighting Tiger teammates, they enjoyed a special season.

Rudmann and Cartmell helped lead Ironton to a 69-11 rout of the Portsmouth West Lady Senators Monday to finish with the best regular season record in school history at 19-1.

"We didn't have any seniors last year, so Rudy and Sarah have been leaders for two years," Hughes said. "They've been part of a great run the past four years."

Ironton is 52-11 over the past three seasons.

Rudmann had 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and five steals. Cartmell finished with 8 points and six rebounds.

"It was kind of sad, but I just went out and played and didn't try to think about it," Rudmann said of her last home game. "There are a lot of great memories here. I'm going to miss all of the girls."

Cartmell was emotional about her final home game, but she was thrilled to be part of a record-setting season.

"It was fun ending up with the record," Cartmell said. "I'm just glad I was part of the team. I knew we could do it. I missed Hack (Sara Hacker) not being here."

With Ironton missing leading scorer and rebounder Sara Hacker, Danielle Henderson had 14 points and Mandi Boykin got 12 points, four assists and three steals to pick up the slack.

It didn't take long to determine the outcome. The Lady Fighting Tigers took a 19-0 lead in the first quarter as Rudmann scored 6 points.

Rudmann hit a 17-footer, Ciara Taylor had a layup and Henderson made two foul shots as the lead went to 25-0 with 6:54 in the second quarter.

Cassie Graf hit a short jumper with 6:40 left in the half to get West on the scoreboard, but it was the only basket of the half for the Lady Senators who were just 1 of 11 from the field over the first two quarters.

Things only seemed to get worse for the Lady Senators in the second half.

Cartmell scored the first 5 points of the third quarter, Henderson nailed a 17-footer, Jessica Waddle hit a 15-footer or her own, and Boykin's layup at the 3:42 mark extended the lead to 49-2.

Amber Sessor followed up her own missed shot to break the West scoring drought with 3:15 on the clock. Sessor had a layup to make it 53-8, but Rudmann hit two straight short jumpers to close out the quarter and it was 57-8 heading into the final quarter.

Both coaches emptied their benches in the fourth quarter.

Sessor led the winless Lady Senators with 6 points.

The Lady Fighting Tigers will play in the Division III sectional tournament at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, at Lucasville Valley High School against the winner of Wheelersburg and Peebles.

In the reserve game, Ironton won 30-18 as Kayla Wileman scored 9 points.
