It was homecoming, so Kurt Jordan decided to celebrate.

The St. Joseph Flyers lone senior hit a short jumper as time expired to beat the Portsmouth East Tartans 48-47 Saturday night.

"Kurt's starting to come around with his game. He's been playing pretty good defense," Flyers coach Kevin Hacker said. "It was homecoming and he's the only senior on the team, so it was a good night for him."

The Flyers were ahead 32-28 after three quarters, but East rallied late in the game to take a 6-point lead.

After East made a foul shot, Michael Basedow and Corey Lewis each

hit 3-pointers with under a minute and a half to play to get the Flyers within one point.

East then missed two foul shots with less than 20 seconds to play and St. Joseph called a time out with eight seconds left to set up the final shot.

Jordan took a pass near the high post and stepped into the lane where he hit an 8-footer to give St. Joseph the win.

"The same thing happened the other night against South Gallia only we missed a couple of shots in close," Hacker said.

"We're starting to play better and our bench is starting to play better. Clay Crum came in and he did a nice job on (Brent) Downing in the second quarter. He's a nice defensive player. He knows his role."

Basedow led the Flyers with a game-high 18 points including three 3-pointers. Jordan added 13 points and six rebounds while Ryan Staton grabbed seven rebounds.

Jeff Swick and Downing had 14 points each for East.

Downing scored 6 points in the first quarter to offset 6 by Basedow as the Tartans took a 10-8 lead.

Basedow had 5 points in the second quarter and Jordan hit a jumper at the buzzer to put the Flyers up 24-22 at the break.

Jordan scored 4 points in the third quarter and Ryan Schwab hit a 3-pointer as the Flyers went up 32-28 and set up the thrilling finish.
