CHESAPEAKE - Veronica Perko and Candace Dickerson aren't just gloves when it comes to defense. They're surgical gloves.

Perko and Dickerson played tight defense to limit high-scoring Chelsea Markins to 13 points as the Chesapeake Lady Panthers posted a 39-29 Ohio Valley Conference win over the Coal Grove Lady Hornets Thursday.

"The last time we played Coal Grove, Dickerson and Perko did a good job on Markins. Tonight she got all her points in the second half," Chesapeake coach John McClung said. "And we were able to move the ball well and got it inside and we were able to finish."

Sara Rucker had 14 points and 10 rebounds while Noelle Wood got 13 points and eight rebounds to lead Chesapeake (12-8, 7-3).

The Lady Panthers have won 11 of their last 14 games.

"We're playing well right now. I hope we take that confidence into the tournament," McClung said.

Besides Markins' 13 points, Samantha Hall had 10 points for Coal Grove (11-9, 5-5).

Wood had 6 points, Brittany Boyle 5 and Rucker 4 as Chesapeake jumped ahead 16-6 in the first quarter. Hall had all 6 of Coal Grove's points.

Chesapeake held Coal Grove to 2 points in the second quarter and it was 22-8 at the half.

Markins had 10 points in third quarter as Coal Grove got within 30-20 after three quarters, but Rucker scored 6 points in the fourth quarter as the Lady Panthers finished with a win.
