LUCASVILLE - A loss of memory gave the Coal Grove Lady Hornets a tournament loss.

The Lady Hornets veered away from their game plan as they fell 57-34 to the Lynchburg Clay Lady Panthers Thursday in the Division IV sectional finals.

Lynchburg controlled the boards and hit five 3-point goals in the first half en route to their victory.

"We didn't do what we wanted to do," Lady Hornets coach Nick Miller said.

"This team shoots 3s more than any team we've played. We wanted to get a hand in their face and we were 10 feet from them. We didn't want to let their big girls go to the boards and they killed us rebounding."

Coal Grove (13-9) took a 4-0 lead to open the game on a layup by Tracy Tackett and two free throws by Jill Lovejoy. But a 3-pointer by Dani Mount put the Lady Panthers up for good at 5-4.

The lead was 19-9 at the end of the quarter and the Lady Panthers got another 3-pointer from Mount and a layup by Codi Hatten to start the second quarter for a 24-9 lead.

Samantha Hall hit a layup with 4:40 left in the half as Coal Grove snapped the scoring run.

Amber Smith gave Lynchburg a 29-15 lead with a 3-pointer, but Coal Grove battled back as Chelsea Markins hit a 3-pointer, Holli Swarts followed up a missed shot, and Markins drained another 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 29-23.

Mount's third 3-pointer of the half gave Lynchburg a 32-23 lead at the half.

The third quarter turned the game Lynchburg's way for good. Coal Grove was guilty of eight turnovers and made just 1 of 9 field goal attempts as the Lady Panthers pulled away to a 48-26 lead.

Miller said Lynchburg's veteran lineup and tournament tested team was a key factor.

"They have a good team that has experience and has been to the district before. On the other hand, we've won only one tournament game in the last eight years," Miller said.

Markins led Coal Grove with 14 points while Hall had 13 points and six rebounds.

Lynchburg Clay (17-4) was led by Stagge with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Mount added 14 points, Lauren King 11 points and Hatten 10 points.
