ATHENS - The St. Joseph Female Flyers had a chance to win, but then things got a little "fouled" up.

After losing two starters to foul trouble early, the Female Flyers saw a close game slip away as they lost 50-34 to the Racine Southern Lady Tornadoes Monday in the Division IV sectional tournament semifinals.

"We got in a little foul trouble the first half and they made their run on us," Female Flyers coach B.J. Hannon said. "We played them even the second half, we just got into a hole in the second quarter and that was the difference in the game."

St. Joseph starters Mallory Hasenauer and Lindsay Dressel both sat out with foul trouble. Hasenauer went out in the first quarter with three fouls and Dressel was forced to the bench for most of the second quarter.

Christina Harvey and Raven Blake scored baskets to get St. Joseph off to a 4-0 lead.

After a time out, Southern ran off eight unanswered points to take an 8-4 lead at the 2:25 mark.

Lindsay Dressel's jumper with 1:28 on the clock got St. Joseph to 8-6 as the quarter ended.

The Lady Tornadoes went on a 10-0 run to begin the second quarter with Ashley Roush scoring 8 points and it was 18-6 with 4:41 left in the half.

Danielle Blair scored with 4:20 on the clock to snap the drought, but Southern led 25-10 before Hasenauer scored to make it 25-12. Joanne Thickens' basket pushed the lead to 27-12 at the break.

The two teams traded baskets in the third quarter and it was 36-18 when St. Joseph got 6 straight points as Blair hit a jumper and Blake two shots and the Female Flyers trailed 37-24 at the end of the quarter.

Harvey hit a shot inside and sank a foul shot to close the gap to 40-27. Southern got 3 points of its own to go in front 45-29 with 1:40 to play.

Dressel drained a 3-pointer and it was 47-34, but that was as close as the Female Flyers would get.

"Give our girls a lot of credit. We faced some adversity and kept battling. They showed a lot of character," Hannon said.

Harvey had 13 points as the Female Flyers finished the season 8-11.

Southern (7-13) was led by Thickens with 15 points. Brooke Kiser scored 13 and Roush added 12.
